Pain in the lower back is usually caused by muscle strain. This pain is officially known as “myofascial pain.” It is often accompanied by pain that moves from the back to the buttock and down into the leg, which is known as sciatica pain. After an injury or after excess exertion, pain may begin to be felt immediately; however, pain may only begin to be felt some hours later. The symptoms may progress in a cycle, starting with a muscle spasm. The pain of the initial spasm causes additional muscle spasms, which result in more pain.
